What is PMH?

What is Perinatal Mental Health (PMH)?

Perinatal mental health (PMH) encompasses various conditions related to the emotional and psychological well-being of women during pregnancy and up to approximately two years after giving birth. While postnatal depression (PND) is commonly known, there are other conditions associated with maternal mental health that fall under the PMH umbrella.

These conditions include ante and postnatal depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and birth trauma.

Antenatal Depression

Antenatal depression refers to depression experienced during pregnancy. Symptoms may include feelings of sadness, anxiety, the inability to experience joy, and a loss of self-confidence. This condition can be triggered by factors such as nausea or by previous experiences of miscarriage or stillbirth.

Postnatal Depression

Postnatal depression affects many women after giving birth. It can manifest at any time within the first year after childbirth and can also impact fathers and partners (Paternal). However, with the appropriate support, guidance, and resources, recovery is possible.

Perinatal Mental Health

Perinatal mental health encompasses all mental health issues associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This includes pre and postnatal depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and postpartum psychosis.

Anxiety

Anxiety can occur at any point during pregnancy, during childbirth, and even after giving birth. It varies from person to person and may be characterized by feelings of tension, nervousness, avoidance of specific situations, panic attacks, and OCD symptoms.

Birth Trauma

Birth trauma can result from a single traumatic event or a combination of experiences during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period. It can also be associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may involve symptoms such as flashbacks.
